It would be difficult not to be moved by the music in the next concert of Chipping Norton Choral Society on 1st April. It may be April Fool’s Day but it is no joke to describe the pieces that are to be performed as some of the greatest British choral music by the composers Sir Hubert Parry and Sir John Stainer, who were both Professors of Music at Oxford, and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford who was Professor of Music at Cambridge all around the turn of the last century. Parry and Stanford became two of the principal figures in the renaissance of British music in the late 19th Century and the choir will perform some of their beautiful part songs as well as the dramatic work ‘The Crucifixion’ by Stainer which forms the centre piece of the evening. The concert will be in St Peter’s Church, Hook Norton and will be conducted by the Society’s Director of Music Peter Hunt with Bernard West on the organ. Seats are unreserved and demand is expected to be very high with tickets only £8 each. The concert starts at 7.30 pm and tickets are available on line at tickets@cncs.org.uk or from Sarah Cobb on 01993 830775, or Cotswold Newsagents in Chipping Norton or from any choir member.

LIBRARY NEWS
The Library is as busy as ever and I thought the start of the year would be a good time to remind residents of the facilities available in Hook Norton Library. There is a good selection of adult fiction and non-fiction, including reference material and County Council Information. The Local Studies section, situated in the Reading Room is growing all the time and thanks to the 'Friends' of the Library, we are starting a magazine section, with Cotswold Life.
Children are well catered for with different sections of Fiction for different age groups, starting with Picture Books and First Readers and continuing right up to the hand picked 'Teen Zone.' The latter contains graphic novels, fiction and non-fiction and also books of general interest.
Videos and DVD's are available for all age groups and are rotated regularly. Audio books are continuing to increase in popularity and are now available on CD as well as on cassette.
There is a colour printer, scanner and photocopier for public use.
The Reading Room is available whenever the Library is open and will shortly have notice boards installed to display posters and art work. There will soon be a display of books, purchased by the Friends of the Library, last year.
Finally, a warm welcome to Roz Fox, my new colleague. Roz works at Deddington Library as well and I hope she will be very happy at Hook Norton. Her enthusiasm and efficiency have already been noticed!
Happy New Year.
Sue Sinclair

MUSIC IN CHARLBURY
Music lovers are invited to come to one or more of a series of music appreciation meetings to be held at The Bell Hotel, Charlbury, on five Wednesdays in April, June, July, September and October, from 10.30 to 3.30 on each date. The subjects will include chamber music, the human voice, Mozart and friends, and music of the 20th century. The tutor is a qualified music teacher, but these are informal meetings, with no written work required, and members are free to take part in discussion or not, as they wish. It's only 25 minutes by car to Charlbury. The fee for the five meetings is £60, or individual meetings may be booked for £14 each.
